ADOPT

Adopting a pet is one of the greatest gifts you can give, to the animal – and to yourself. Thank you for considering adoption from  Whatcom Humane Society.

Our interactive adoption process strives to place animals into permanent, responsible and loving homes. Our staff work with potential adopters to help choose the best match possible, both for the animal and the adopter. Prior to meeting an animal, potential adopters are asked to complete an adoption application to better help our staff understand what you are looking for in a companion animal. These applications remain on file for 6 months, so there is no need to complete an application each time you visit our domestic animal shelter. Adopters must complete an adoption application and be able to fulfill the adoption requirements necessary in order to be considered or approved for adoption.

Application forms for specific animals (Adobe Acrobat PDF files) may be downloaded under “Adoption Fees” below.

 . Warren .
 . Warren . . Warren .
  • Peacock / Peafowl
Warren is an 8 year old India blue peacock. He has lived with a variety of other birds (turkeys, ducks, chickens) without any issues. He’s a sensitive soul who sleeps in a bantee chicken sized nesting box and has always been very gentle with his chicken friends. Warren is skittish, especially of new people, but handleable and food motivated. He is not aggressive or territorial. Warren enjoys hopping up on different perches, searching for grubs, and strolling around his aviary. Peacocks can be very loud during mating season (around May-July) when the males “call”. Warren enjoys classic rock music which seems to help distract him from calling, although he can still be quite loud. Although they don’t look it, peafowl are strong fliers and can also jump very high. They can live over 20 years. They molt (shed) their beautiful tail feathers in late summer and regrow them until the next mating season. While he has his full plumage, he’s about 7 feet long, so shelter large enough to accommodate that long tail while turning around is important. Warren would love a home away from neighbors that would be bothered by his calling, so country life would suit him. A tall, covered aviary to prevent escaping and allow for stretching that long tail would be ideal. Peafowl will wander if they get out. An area of 100 square feet minimum is recommended for one peafowl. Warren would like some feathered friends to bond with. For more information about Warren, please email: foster@whatcomhumane.org

Ready for a cute easy going bun in your life? Meet Gracie. This sweet heart is an easy to handle bunny that would love a home to continue working on her socialization. Gracie will need a home willing to give her lots of fresh hay, greens, and the occasional carrot or berry treat. Though providing care for these adorable creatures isn’t difficult, rabbits have a long lifespan—more than 10 years—and many specific care requirements. Just like cats, rabbits can easily learn to use a litter box with training from their owners. Gracie would love plenty of wood blocks and chew toys to keep her happy. Gracie has free range in her last home and would love somewhere that could let her explore (with supervision). Gracie didn't get along very well with the bunny in her previous home so she would like to be the only bunny in her new home. Are you ready to open your home and heart to a delightful, darling bunny? Please fill out an application at customer service to meet with her.

Meet Kubo, he is a nervous big guy with a heart looking for the love of a forever home. He was surrendered because his previous owners could no longer keep him in their home. He has grown up being a guard dog and because he is nervous he would do best in a loving reassuring home instead. He will need some additional socializing because of his reaction to some strangers but with some work with a trainer that can be easily resolved through positive reinforcement training. Kubo needs an adult only home as children make him extra nervous. He also has shown that he is fearful of men. Kubo loves other dogs and would love a play buddy! Other dogs help him feel more confident and he may be a good candidate for doggy day care! A proper introduction should be completed to be sure Kubo and another dog will get along. Because he is a shepherd he would be best to not live with a cat, they tend to have a high prey drive and enjoy chasing the smaller critters. If you have a reassuring happy home for Kubo, visit with him today to see if you are the yin to his yang.

He could use a refresher on ground manners but is a total gentleman for the farrier and vet. Beau, aka Beau Cam Rock (Prior Names: Excuse My Card, Cam’s Card Shark, Another Excuse and No Nukes) is a 20 year old branded and gelded Standardbred off track pacer buggy racer. He was foaled on 5/07/1999. He is considered a gaited horse and had a lucrative racing career before being retired. Beau loves other horses, trailers amazingly well, is not spooky (unless in the arena where he thinks its race time and gets anxious but not scary), good with children to brush and pet him, cats and dogs and stands for the farrier. Never gave rear, buck or bite. He appears to be bombproof when it comes to loud noises too - probably from many years spent at the track. He's loving and really enjoys carrots and apples. He’s easy to catch and loves to have as much turnout time as possible. He is a kind and gentle horse but in his heart, mind and body he is still a racehorse. Because he is a pacer the faster you let him go the smoother the ride becomes. On the trail he is compliant but not content to go slow and wants to be the lead horse. He will do best in an experienced home that has a job for him (something with speed), other horses preferably and a rider that is high level intermediate to advanced and not afraid to GO! He will also need to have someone who can work with him on his groundwork as far as standing still for mounting, flexing and lowering his head etc. If you have the time and experience for this lovely guy, please contact WHS!

  • Chinchilla
Say hi to Bom. This sweet little fluff ball is looking for a home to call her own. They are smart, inquisitive, active, vocal, loving animals and entertaining to watch. Chinchillas do require some specialized care so please do some research before taking one home. Chinchillas require dust baths; no water for their very special fur. Chinchilla's will also need a nice big enclosure so they can play and explore. They cannot have any paper bedding because they think it is a snack and will eat the paper and temperatures in excess of 72 degrees can be very detrimental to their health so a climate controlled environment is very important. Since they can live up to 20 years they can be long time companions. Although loving animals, they do require gentle and careful handling and for this reason they do best in a home with older respectful children. Chinchillas are vegetarians, have sensitive stomachs, and require specific foods to maintain their health. They are also animals that partake in coprophagy, meaning they eat their own feces. This practice is completely normal and necessary for them to get important nutrients. Hay provides the roughage your chinchilla needs and is a very important part of his daily diet. It also can aid in wearing his ever growing teeth. Timothy or Alfalfa hay is a good choice along with commercial pallet chinchilla food. If you would like to spend some time with her please head up to customer service for an application to meet with her.

He never complains about it being dinner time or time to come into the barn and loves to be groomed. He will stand perfectly for hours if someone is brushing him! He doesn't mind being alone, and is very loyal to his person. If you are interested in learning more about Tonto, please contact our farm caretaker at farm@whatcomhumane.org.

Baby is a 12 year old Bay Quarter Horse searching for her forever home. Baby can be timid but she is never aggressive. She does need a home with the patience to move slowly around her - especially until she's comfortable. Singing to her often helps calm her down! As soon as she warms up, she is quite charming! Once she gets to know her person better, she definitely enjoys a good cuddle. Baby does great with all the horses, and all of the horses adore her as well. We are not sure if she is broke, she was a brood mare in her previous home. Baby has been diagnosed with asthma but it seems to be situational. Something in the pasture is causing her to struggle with breathing, however, in the stall and paddocks she is perfectly fine. She will need medication for the rest of her life, but it is only given on an as needed basis, not an everyday dosage. She also has oddly formed feet so she is slightly prone to laminitis, but with the proper environment she is okay. Other than that, she is a pretty typical lovely horse. She just wants to eat treats and lay in the sand all day! If you are interested in adding Baby to your family, please contact farm@whatcomhumane.org.

Pete is a 1994 AQHA Chestnut Tobiano Paint gelding who has been used as a trail horse in the past. He has had some issues with hoof abscesses throughout his life, but is currently sound and could possibly be used for some light riding. Pete is an expressive boy who adores a snack of plums every now and then as well as the company of mares. Pete has been mainly kept out to pasture for the last few years, so he could use refreshers on his ground manners. He is sweet and friendly with people and other horses, and will come running from across the pasture when he sees you at the gate. Many questions can be answered by reading through the text below. Kindly read the information before contacting us. Please note: The picture above is a stock photo. Thank you for your interest in foster kittens! Kittens who are in our foster care program are generally kittens who arrived at the humane society as unweaned orphans , were still nursing, or were not old or big enough to be placed up for adoption. These kittens would not have survived in a stressful shelter environment. Our foster care program provides care and comfort for animals with special needs in private homes of our trained volunteer foster care providers. Once the kittens are old enough (usually 6-8 weeks) and weigh enough to be spayed or neutered (2 lbs), they return to the shelter for adoption. Call the shelter at (360) 733-2080 to inquire about available kittens. Please note that we do not place “holds” on animals until you’ve met them in person, even if you’ve filled out an application and expressed interest in a specific animal. This is because we want to ensure that each animal is a good fit for the interested party, and that the interested party is a good fit for the animal. We try to set each adoption up for success, for both the animals and for the people. The kittens would love to meet you! Do you feel the same? Please fill out an adoption application (here or at either shelter) and turn it in to Amy Wilkinson, the foster care coordinator via email at foster@whatcomhumane.org, or fax it to 360.733.4746. Our adoption counselors will help you figure out if you're right for each other. Questions about foster kittens in general or other foster animals? The Golden Girl

I thought I’d give you an update on how Goldie is doing.  She is a sweet dog and my girl’s love snuggling with her.  I know there was some concern about her getting along with my cat.  That has not been an issue at all.  Our cat actually rubs on Goldie and they get along great.  I’ve been working on socializing her and she’s made friends with a few dogs in the neighborhood.  The sad part is how she reacted towards some of my guy friends, leading me to think she has suffered some abuse in her past life.  She is getting past this thanks to my friends working with her.  She is still a bit anxious and when she is settled we want to come get her a playmate that can match her energy level.  Goldie is an intelligent dog and a welcome addition to our family.  Thanks for letting us have her!!

A Friend for My Dog

An update on Tarzan (right), who is now named Mackie. He is the greatest addition and I’m so glad I found him. I’m also very grateful for the Whatcom Humane Society and all the hard work you do there. Mackie is now absolute best friends with my older pitbull Messy and is helping keep him young. They both go to work with me every day and my employer purchased a canopy for my truck so they can ride safely.

When I first got him he was pretty rough around the edges – but in a little over a month he has come so far. He’s an amazing dog and I’m so glad you guys helped him until his person came along. Since I adopted him I have learned a lot. I also discovered that buying a memory foam twin mattress is the best dog bed the world. Again, thank you guys so much for providing the hard work, dedication and love to all the animals that come through your doors.

Cat with a pink collar named Margo

We Named Her Margo

Hi! My mom and I adopted a cat from you guys in September. Her name was Shakira, I changed her name to Margo, after Margo in the book Paper Towns. She is such a great fit for me. I wanted a cat that would always be around me, be affectionate and sleep with me, that is exactly who she is. She follows my sleep schedule, at about 6:30am every morning she will wake me up, I absolutely love her!   She is very vocal. When I get home from school she’s normally in my room and starts meowing until I greet her. My mom told me while I was at school the second day we had her she was meowing for me until I came home. She was immediately attached to me. Her first night here we put her in a large crate to get her use to the surroundings and the next night she slept on my bed and has been ever since. She always sleeps on me or next to me. She’s such a funny girl. I love her personality. She is a very precious cat. I’m really glad I was able to adopt her. She is the perfect match for me.

Thank you Whatcom Humane Society!  -Brieanah, Rhonda and Margo.
